Bhagavad Gita Chapter 1 -Arjuna Vishada Yoga - Sloka 37 - 39

The entire content of this mail is from Swami Chidbhavananda's translation of  The Bhagavad Gita, published by Ramakrishna Mission.

Arjuna's Fallacy-  slokas 31-46

Chapter 1 - Sloka 37
krsna in mathura
tasmat na arhah vayam hantum dhartarashtran sva bandhavan I
sva janma hi katham hatva sukhinah syam madhav II   Sloka 37
तस्मात न अर्हाः वयं हन्तुं धार्तराष्ट्रान स्व बान्धवान ।
स्व जन्म हि कथं  हत्वा सुखिनः स्याम माधव ।।

We shouldnot therefore slay the sons of Dhritarashtra our kinsmen; for how can we. O Madhava killing our own kinsmen, be happy?

Chapter 1 - Sloka 38
yadi api ete na pashyanti lobha upahata chetasah I
kulakshaya kritam dosham mitra drohe cha pathakam II Sloka 38
यदि  अपि एते न पश्यामि लोभ उपहत चेतसः ।
कुलक्षय कृतं दोषं मित्र द्रोहे च पातकं ।।

Although these, with understanding clouded by greed, see no guilt in the extermination of a family, no crime in hostility to friends,

Chapter 1 - Sloka 39
katham na gyeyam asmamih papat asmat nivartitum I
kulakshaya kritam dosham prapashyadbihir janardana II Sloka 39
कथं न ज्ञेयं अस्ममिः पापात् अस्मत निवर्तितुं ।
कुलक्षय कृतं दोषं प्रपष्यद्भिर जनार्दन ।।

Why should we not learn to recoil from such a sin O janardana we who see evil in the destruction of a family?

This Arjuna who leads so much now for the saving of a family, does not yet know that he himself is going to exterminate that very family in a few days to come. Goaded by greed of kingdom the Kauravas want to kill the Pandavas,.Prompted by attachment to kith and kin Arjuna wants to spare the desperadoes. Are greed and attachment the only guiding forces in life?
