The Function of the Gunas 5-10
1 Gita Sloka  Every Day - Chapter 14 - Gunatraya Vibhaga Yoga - Sloka 5

Sattvam rajah tama iti gunah prakriti sambhavah I
Nibhandhanti mahabaho dehe dehinam  avyayam II sloka 5
सत्त्व रजः तम इति गुणः प्रकृति संभवः I
निभन्धन्ति महाबाहो देहे देहिनम् अव्ययम्  II श्लोक 5

Sattva, Rajas and Tamas - these gunas, O mighty armed one, born of prakriti, bind the indestructible embodied one fast in the body.

The prakriti is made of three gunas. They are inherent in the essential nature of prakriti and are particular expressions of it. They can be known only by their effects such as 'brightness' etc. They are not apparent in the unevolved state of prakriti but become apparent in its transformation as Mahat, etc. They bind the self, which is conjoined with bodies such as those of divinities, men etc. composed of the modifications of prakriti beginning with mahat and ending with the elements.  The self is immutable ie. it is not in its pristine nature conjoined with the gunas. But gunas bind it when residing in the body. The meaning is that they bind it by virtue of the limiting conditions of its living in the body.

Sri Krishna then begins to speak of the nature of the Sattva, Rajas and Tamas and the modes of binding.

The Process of Birth 3-4
1 Gita Sloka  Every Day - Chapter 14 - Gunatraya Vibhaga Yoga - Sloka 4

Sarva yonishu kaunteya murtayah sambhavanti yah I
Tasam brahma mahat yonih aham beeja pradah pita II sloka 4
सर्व योनिषु कौन्तेय मूर्तयः संभवन्ति याः  I
तासां ब्रह्म महत् योनिः अहं बीज प्रदः पिता II श्लोक 4

Whatever forms are produced, O Kaunteya, in any wombs whatsoever, the great Brahman (prakriti) is their womb, I the seed-giving father.

The wombs of prakriti are infinitely graded providing scope for all types of beings to sprout forth. The celestials, the human beings, the beasts, birds, insects vegetables, bacteria - all these have their suitable wombs to take birth and thrive The prakriti is the cosmic womb for the entire creation. And Iswara the father.

How does the prakriti bind the jivas? The process is explained next

The entire content of this mail is from Swami Adidevananda's translation of Ramanuja's  Gita  Bhashya and Swami Chidbhavananda's Bhagavad Gita, both published by Ramakrishna Mission

How is the cycle of birth kept up? The answer comes..

The Process of Birth 3-4
1 Gita Sloka  Every Day - Chapter 14 - Gunatraya Vibhaga Yoga - Sloka 3

Uddhava laments Krishna's Leaving

Mama yonih mahat brahma tasmin garbham dadhami aham I
Sambhavah sarva bhutanam tatah bhavati bharat II sloka 3
मम योनिः महत् ब्रह्म तस्मिन् गर्भं दधामि सहं I
संभवः सर्व भूतानां ततः भवति भारत II श्लोक 3

My womb is the Mahat Brahma (prakriti); in that I place a germ; thence O Bharata, is the birth of all beings.

In that great brahman forming my womb, I lay the germ. The non-sentientprakriti is alluded to it in the text "Earth, water, fire, air, ether, manas, buddhi and ahankara"- thus my prakriti is eight-fold. (7.4.5). This prakriti is designated here as the great brahman  by reason of its being the cause of modifications like the Mahat, Ahankara etc. In the srutis also, here ans there even, the prakriti is mentioned as great brahman, as in, "He who is all knowing, all wise, whose austerity consists of knowledge - from him are produced this Brahman as also food, ie. the universe of name and form. The higher prakriti, which is the mass of sentient selves, the life principle, is here expressed by the term garbha, the source or womb in which all living things originate. I lay the germ, constituting the mass of conscious things, in that prakriti which forms the womb. From that conjunction of the two, brought about by my will is brought forth the origin of all entities from Brahma down to the tuft of grass.

Short Notes
He is the son of Thirumalai Nambi’s wife’s brother. His parents named him Pranatarthiharan. He was born in the Hevilambi varsham in the year 1057 AD, in the month of Chithra and star of Hastham.

Attracted by Ramanuja’s brilliance (tejas), (gyanam) and qualities (Gunas), he became his disciple. Later he took over the service of preparing food for Ramanujar. Lets know how that happened. Once since some peopleput poison in Udayavar’s alms, he went on a fast. Hearing of this, Acharya Goshtipuranar desired to see him and came to Srirangam. Udayavar too came out to receive him and prostrated in fron of the acharys on the hotsands of the Cauvery river bed. Unable to bear this, Kidambi achan immediately lay down on the very hot sand and asked Ramanujar to prostrate on him. Praising this act of Kidambi achan, Goshtipurnar, ordered him
“Since you are so concerned for Udayavar, hereafter you will prepare the food for him”. Since then, Kidambi achan took over the holy kitchen (thirumadapalli) of Ramanujar and began preparing food for him.
He was one of the four Sri Bhashya simhasanadipatis established by Udayavar. (like Mudaliandan). At the time when Udayavar was about to ascend to SriVaikuntam, he taught him and Sri Kurugaipiran Pillan some secret granthas, (commentaries) and ordered him to teach it other good disciples.

He consecrated the idol of Sri Ramanujar at Melkote and lived there to propogate the Vishishtadwaita
Siddhantam.

Resorting to this knowledge, partaking of my nature, they are not born at the time of creation, nor do they suffer at the time of dissolution.

They 'resorting to this knowledge, which will be explained later, come to partake of my nature, and they attain my status. " They are not born at the time of creation, they are not subjected to the process of creation, and they do not suffer at the time of dissolution. that is they are not subjected to the distress involved in the dissolution of the universe.
Boiled paddy dos not sprout when sowed in the field. But the unboiled grain keeps on propogating. The man bathed in the fire of Brahma jnana is no more troubled with births and deaths. But the ignorant one cannot escape from that ordeal.

A SMALL WRITE UP ON KIDAMBI APULLAR

One of Nadadoor Ammal’s disciples was Kidambi Apullar. He was a descendant of Kidambi Achan who did service to Ramanuja by taking care of his kitchen.  Kidambi Achan was one of the four SriBhashya simahasanadipatis established by Ramanuja to whom he had also given some Rahasya granthas. Achan’s son was Kidambi Ramanujar. His son was Kidambi Rangarajar

Kidambi Rangarajar's son Kidambi Appullar was born in Vikrama varsham year 1220 AD in the month of Chithra and star of Thiruvadirai. Being born on the birth day of Swami Ramanujar, his parents named him as Ramanujar too. Since even as a child he showed an ardent interest in all types of learning like Thirukurugai piran Pillan, everyone was astonished at his intellectual capacities and said ‘Appillano’ and this name stuck with him since then.  Over time this name morphed into ‘Appullar’.

He did his initial learning under the guidance of his father Kidambi Rangarajar. Then he did kalakshepam under Nadadoor Ammal. By his education, sharp intellect, excellence in speech, he won many debates and earned the name “Vaadihamsambhuvaahar”.

Of the two works he wrote, only Nyaya Kulisam is the only one available now. The other one is now not available. In the work Nyaya Kulisam, the four doctrines of Vishishtadwaita Siddhanttam have been discussed. Apullar passed away in 1295 AD.

Shri Bhagavan Uvacha
Param bhuyah pravakshyami gyananam gyanam uttamam I
Yat gyatva munayah sarve paraam siddhitim itah gatah II Sloka 1

The Lord said
I shall again dca;re that supreme knowledge, the best of all forms of  knowledge; by knowing which, all the sages have passed from this world to the highest perfection.

The sages who have been blessed with self-knowledge have nothing else to gain. And this supreme knowledge has also been explained. Still it is again delineated from another angle. While Brahma jnana is the easiest to acquire for those who have purified minds, it is the hardest  and the least understoodfor those whose minds are steeped in worldliness. It therefore requires to be presented in as many ways as possible. The votaries of Brahma jnana  are designated as munis. Perfection is theirs to the extent that they make progress in this knowledge. While the advanced Brahma jnanis are ever perfect in themselves, their bodily existence often puts on apparent defects. The limits of the kshetra   ought not however imputed to the kshetrajna or self. But since this error is committed frequently, self knowledge requires to be expounded repeatedly and in many ways.
