Bhagavad Gita Chapter 2 - Samkhya Yoga - Sloka 23

The entire content of this mail is from Swami Chidbhavananda's translation of  The Bhagavad Gita, published by Ramakrishna Mission.

Atman is Super Mundane- 23 - 25

1 Gita Sloka every day - Chapter 2 - Samkhya Yoga - Sloka 23

Na enam chindanti shastrani na enam dahati pavakah I

Na chainam kledayanti apah na shoshayati marutah II sloka 23

न एनं छिन्दन्ति शस्त्राणि न एनं दहति पावकः ।

न चैनं क्लेदयन्ति अपः न शोषयति मरुतः ।। श्लोक २३

Weapons do not cleave the Atman, fire burns It not, Water wets It not, wind dries It not.

Among the 5 elements Akasa is one that is actionless. So no reference has been made here. The actions of the other 4 elements do not affect the Atman. Weapons are made of the stuff which earth is. Atman being indivisible, weapons cannot hurt it. All the other 4 active elements are incapable of acting on Akasa which is inert. How then can they set on Atman which is Chit -akasa which transcends the inert Akasa itself?

The Atman remains unaffected by mundane things. Pleasure and pain, virtue and vice - dual states such as these do not have sway on it. But they affect the person identified with the body. Smoke tarnishes the walls, but not the space within  them
