Sanjaya Uvacha
Iti arjunam vasudevah tatha uktva svakam rupam darshayam asa bhuyah I
Ashvasa ayam asa cha bhitam enam bhutva punah soumya vapuh mahatma II sloka 50

Sanjaya said
Having spoken to Arjuna thus to Arjuna, Vasudeva showed again his form; and the great souled One assuming His gentle form consoled him who was terrified.

Vasudeva is the son of Vasudeva and Devaki. While being born as their son, He showed his benign and soul captivating form to his parents, who were then in imprisonment. The Lord strikes terror only to the extent necessary to tame the strayed into the right path. He is Mahatma  because of this noble act of reclamation.
