Meaning
When a lion leaps from a mountain to another, all the creatures that live on his body go with him. Even so, when Udayavar transcended this world, all of us who are associated with him benefit from this as well.

A SMALL WRITE UP ON KIDAMBI APULLAR

One of Nadadoor Ammal’s disciples was Kidambi Apullar. He was a descendant of Kidambi Achan who did service to Ramanuja by taking care of his kitchen.  Kidambi Achan was one of the four SriBhashya simahasanadipatis established by Ramanuja to whom he had also given some Rahasya granthas. Achan’s son was Kidambi Ramanujar. His son was Kidambi Rangarajar

Kidambi Rangarajar's son Kidambi Appullar was born in Vikrama varsham year 1220 AD in the month of Chithra and star of Thiruvadirai. Being born on the birth day of Swami Ramanujar, his parents named him as Ramanujar too. Since even as a child he showed an ardent interest in all types of learning like Thirukurugai piran Pillan, everyone was astonished at his intellectual capacities and said ‘Appillano’ and this name stuck with him since then.  Over time this name morphed into ‘Appullar’. 

He did his initial learning under the guidance of his father Kidambi Rangarajar. Then he did kalakshepam under Nadadoor Ammal. By his education, sharp intellect, excellence in speech, he won many debates and earned the name “Vaadihamsambhuvaahar”. 


Of the two works he wrote, only Nyaya Kulisam is the only one available now. The other one is now not available. In the work Nyaya Kulisam, the four doctrines of Vishishtadwaita Siddhanttam have been discussed. Apullar passed away in 1295 AD.

Serenity of the mind, gentleness, silence, slef control and purity of disposition - This is called as the mental austerity.

Eschewing depression and confusion and being established in a blissful calmness is serenity of mind. Being kindly disposed towards all is gentleness. Keeping all mentation in a state of equilibrium is silence. Control of the mind is superior to the control of the tongue and the body. Permitting pure thoughts and noble emotions alone to crop up in the mind is self control mentioned here. What is in  the mind expresses itself as words and actions. HE who has mastery over his mind never utters an unwanted word and never does an undesirable action. When a person's temperament is congenial and attitude felicitous, he is said to be imbued with purity of disposition. Maintaining this benign state of mind under all circumstances is austerity of mind

 अन उद्वेग करं वाक्यं सत्यं प्रिय हितं च यत् I 
स्वाध्याभ अभि आसनं च एव वाक् मयं तपः उच्यते II श्लोक 15

The speech which causes no excitement, which is truthful, pleasant and beneficial, and also the practise of sacred recitation - These are said to form the austerity of speech.

The harm donethrough speech is often more painful than that caused by physical violence. Words of excitement and words that hurt people should be avoided by all means by a spiritual aspirant.

Truth in some cases is unpleasant to hear and vice versa. The best course is to present the truth in as pleasant  a way as possible. But there should be no deviation from truth for the sake of pleasantness. If it comes to it, even at the cost of pleasantness, truth alone should be ever upheld.

Flattery is often in tune with  truthfulness and is very pleasant to hear. May a sadhaka employ it in his dealings with people? No. Flattery has to be scrupulously avoided. Harsh words have not done as much harm to society as undue compliments have. Even great men have fallen victim to flattery and gone off their moorings. The words utteredought to be pleasant and beneficial but never pandering to one's vanity. Beneficial words form a benediction and they alone must be spoken always.

The vedas are the oldest books known to humanity and they are held most sacred because of their dealings with matters spiritual. Chanting them daily with proper intonation is not only a perfect vocal training but it is also a sanctifying agency to the student. This book, However, is not within the reach of all. Fortunately, there are many sacred books in all languages. a devotional reading or chanting of them daily, forms an aspect of spiritual discipline.

All the four phasesof traiing the tongue dilated here, put together form the austerity of speech.

Worship of the gods, of the twice born, of teachers and of the wise; purity, uprightness, continence, and non-injury - these are said to be the austerity of the body.

Tapah means showing proper respect and honouring devas, brahmins, acharyas and men of great wisdom; purity, by such acts as bathing in sacred waters; oneness of action by body and mind; (like, not prostrating before somebody, while inwardly hating and cursing him); being free from activities like looking at women, with lust; not injuring other living beings. 

Useful metals are extracted from melting ores. Old and scrap metals are renewed by the same process of melting. The life of a man can similarly be  renewed and rejuvenated by tapas and austerity. It is a boon with which man is endowed so that he may reform and recreate himself into a higher order of existence. Blessed is the man who applies himself to this spiritual means so that he may emerge from manhood into godhood. Man is constituted of the body, speech and mind. When these three components  are modified by tapas, man automatically changes for the better.

The Three Kinds of Food 8-10

Vidhi hinam asrushta annam mantra hinam adakshinam I
Shraddha virahitam yagnam tamasam pari chakshate II sloka 13
विधि हीनं अस्रुष्ट अअन्नं मन्त्र हीनं अदक्षिणं I 
श्रद्धा विरहितं यज्ञं तामसं परि चक्षते II  1श्लोक 13

They declare the yagna to be tamasika which is contrary to the ordinances, in which no food is distributed, which is devoid of mantras, gifts and shraddha.

All good acts which are conducive to public welfare are emphatically enjoined in the sastras. Therefore they maybe all undertaken even without consulting the sastras. But whatever act is harmful, it is prohibited by the scriptures which are infallible guides. Therefore the sastras necessarily come in for guidance whenever a doubt arises about teh validity of an action. 

Beings depend on food for their existence.  Voluntary distribution of it is tehrefore a mark of consideration and regard for beings. Cherishing beings with food is a form of worship of the Almighty. 

Mantras are the external indications of the solemn determination and noble intents behind an action. An undertaking which is devoid of elevating ideas is more mechanical than human. 

Reverent gifts are to be made to those who participate in  a yagna with an attitude of service. Gifts are also to be made to other deserving people and to good causes.

Above all if a holy undertaking be devoid of shraddha, it is to be eschewed as vainglorious and demoniac. The tamasika type of people undertake yagnas full of these defects.

Austerity is a holy means for the human to emerge into the divine . Its characteristics are mentioned in the next few stanzas.

That which is performed, O best of Bharatas, in expectation of reward or self glorification, is known to be Rajasika yoga.

It is no true worship that which is done in a bartering spirit. The man offers an oblatiuon to the Lord and appeals to him for a favour or mercy or a miraculous cure for a disease. There is another man who offers worship for show, for advertisement or self glorification. All these forms of worship are of rajasika nature, more detrimental than helpful to the spiritual progress.

Aphala akankshibhih yagnah vidhi drushtah yah ijyate I
Yashtavyam eva iti manah samadhaya sa sattvikah II sloka 11
अफल आकाङ्क्षिभिः यज्ञः विधि दृष्टः यः इज्यते I 
यष्टव्यं एव इति मनः समाधाय स सात्त्विकः II श्लोक 11

That yagna is sattvika which is performed by men desiring no fruit, as enjoined by ordinance, with their mind fixed on the yagna only, for its own sake.

A mother who serves her baby expects no reward. She finds satisfaction in service. The good and the holy worship the Lord expecting nothing in return. This divine act is inherent in them. Again their adoration is quite in tune with the ordinance of the scriptures. All forms of yagna resolve themselves into the  adoration of the almighty. The sattvika men are given to this kind of worship. 

While the Pandavas were in exile this pertinent question was put to Yudhishtra by Queen Draupadi."Why should these series of trials and tribulations befall you who are an embodiment of Dharma.?" The reply besspeaks the mental calibre of the man concerned. "Behold! O Queen, the yonder majestic Himalayas. I cant help adoring them, Sorrow finds no quarters in my mind given to this adoration". Yudhishtra was made of such stuff as this. And this verily is the way of the sattvika.

The Three Kinds of Food 8-10

Yaat yamam gata rasam pooti paryushitam cha yat I
Ucchishtam api cha amedhyam bhojanam tamasa priyam II sloka 10
यात् यामं गत रसम् पूति पर्युषितं च यत् I 
उच्छिष्टं अपि च अमेध्यं भोजनं तामस प्रियम् II  श्लोक 10

That which is stale, tasteless, stinking, cooked overnight, refuse and impure is the food liked by the tamasika.

Discrimination has to be used in regard to food cooked overnight. There are certain kinds of food which can not be used immediately after cooking, but have to be kept for hours or even days before being used. There are others which have to be consumed soon after preparation. The fitness for consumption or otherwise of a food article is self-revealed. A fruit kept long loses its attractive colour as it gets rotten.The putrid food produces foul odour. Old food becomes stale. The spoilt food becomes tasteless. The food already tasted by somebody is unfit to be taken by another. The remnants left over in the plate by one individual are unfit to be served to another. People with a tamasika disposition are heedless to all these restrictions. They help themselves to any impure or rotten food without the least hesitation. Their attainments are indicated by the sort of food they take and the manner in which they partake of it.

The way in which adoration is made to the Almighty is another indicator of the spiritual attainments of people. It is being elaborated as follows in the next sloka.

katu amla lavana ati ushna teekshna ruksha vidahinah I
Ahara rajasasya ishtah dukha shokha amaya pradah II sloka 9
कटु अम्ल लवण अति उष्ण तीक्ष्ण रुक्ष विदाहिनः I 
आहार राजस्य इष्टः दुख शोख आमय  प्रदाः  II श्लोक 9

The foods that are bitter, sour, saline, over hot, pungent, dry and burning are liked by rajasika and are productive of pain grief and disease.

There is a tingling and burning in the tongue; the eyes get bloodshot and tears trickle down profusely; thenostrils water copiously; the head reels; the stomach burns -  these are the characteristics of the rajasika foods. They tell upon the duration of the life of the consumer; they are definitely injurious to spiritual practices.

Ayuh sattva bala rogya sukha priti vivarshanah I
Rasyah snigdhah sthirah hrudyah aharah sattvica priyah II sloka 8
आयुः सत्त्व बल रोग्य सुख प्रीति विवर्षणः I 
रस्याः स्निग्धः स्थिरः हृद्यः आहारः सात्त्विकः  प्रियाः II श्लोक 8 

The foods that augment vitality, energy, vigour, health, joy and cheerfulness, which are savoury and oleaginous, substantial and agreeable, are liked by the sattvika

The food that adds to the cheerfulness is also a promoter of good appetite. The food that is substantial gives prolonged sustenance. The.  non-substantial food gets quickly digested. It gives no vigour to the body, But the food that is hard to digest weakens the digestive organs and hinders longevity. Time and place have their part to play in the consumption of foods mentioned here. Breakfast should necessarily be light. Supper should be so adjusted that while going to bed at night the digestive organs also have the much needed rest.Attention maybe paid to the partaking of warmth giving foods in cold countries and of those that have a cooling effect in hot countries

Eat as much as you require in the day time; but reduce the food as much as you can at night.
