The Three Fold Austerity 14-19
1 Gita Sloka Every Day - Chapter 17 - Shraddhatraya Vibhaga Yoga - Sloka 18
Satkar maan pooja artham tapah dambhena cha eva yat I
Kriyate tat iha proktam rajasam chalam adhruvam II sloka 18
सत्कार मान पूजा अर्थं तपः ढम्भेन च एव यत् I
क्रियते तत् इह प्रोक्तं राजसं चलम् अध्रुवं II श्लोक 18
he austerity which is practised with the object of gaining respect, honour and reverence, and with ostentation is here said to be rajasika; it is unstable and transitory.
The rajasika man does not understand that austerity is the effective means to recast his base nature into benign. As children play at imitating the actualities in life, this man imitates tapas for mere show. He expects others to give him esteem as a man of austerity. The way of the world is to hold a holy man in great regard. The rajasika man avails himself of that credibility in society and poses as a man given to severe spiritual discipline. Apart from gaining adoration from the public he has no other purpose for his asuterity. There is no stability in it. After the glamour for it is over, he either suspends or puts an end to it. There is no spiritual value in this kind of rajasika austerity
