Karya karana kartrtve hetuh prakritih uchyate I
Purushah sukha dukhanam bhoktrtve hetuh chyate II sloka 20
कार्य कारण कर्त्र्त्वे हेतुः प्रकृतिः उच्यते I
पुरुषः सुख दुखानां भोक्त्र्त्वे हेतुः उच्यते II श्लोक 20  

The prakriti is said to be the cause of the agency to the body (karya) and sense organs (karanam). The self is said to be the cause of experiencing pleasure and pain.

The karya means the body, the karanas means the instruments ie. the senses of perception and action plus the manas. In their operations, the prakriti, subservient to the self, is alone the causal factor. The sense is that their operations, which are the means of experience, have their foundation in prakriti, which has developed in the form of body subservient to the self. The agency of the self means that the self is the cause of the will (effort) to support the body. The self associated with the body is the cause for experiencing pain and pleasure. The meaning is that it is the seat of all the experiences.

विकारण च गुणान  च एव विद्धि प्रकृति सम्भवान् II श्लोक 19

Know that prakriti  and pususha are both without beginning; and know also that all modifications and gunas are born  of prakriti.

Iti kshetram tatha gyanam gyeyam choktam sama satah I
Mad bhajatah etat vigyaya mad bhavaya upa padyate II sloka 18
इति क्षेत्रं तथा ज्ञानं ज्ञेयं चोक्तं सम सतः I 
मद् भजतः एतत् विज्ञाय मद भावाय उप पद्यते II श्लोक 18

Thus the kshetra, knowledge and that which has to be known have been briefly described. My devotee on knowing this, is fitted for my state.

On whatever object a man directs his entire attention, he is able to understand that object in its true state. He who is absorbed in devotion to Iswara is able to know him. It is jnana when man understands that God alone is revealing himself as everything. This wisdom places him for ever in the presence of Iswara. Soaked as he is in the thought and feeling of God, he dwells with God.

Jyotisham api tat jyotih tamasah param uchyate I
Gyanam gyeyam gyana gamyam hrudi sarvasya vishishtatham II sloka 17
ज्योतिषं अपि तत् ज्योतिः तामसाः परम् उच्यते I
ज्ञानम् ज्ञेयं ज्ञान गम्यम् हृदि सर्वस्य विशिश्तथम् II श्लोक 17 

The light of all lights, He is said to be beyond darkness; knowledge, the knowable, the goal of knowledge, seated in the hearts of all. 

Though the sun and the stars are self luminous, they lose their luminosity while in pralaya. Busshi acquires its powers of understanding from the Atman; but it also loses that borrowed faculty; whereas the Atman never loses its light. The physical light and darkness, characteristic of the inert matter, do not have any effect on or access to Atman. In pitch darkness, one is not able to see one's own body and clothing. But that darkness is no hindrance to the self-cognizing of its own presence. This self cognizance is not improved upon by the presence of sunlight. Self awareness is self evident. The sunlight and the darkness are perceived by the physical eye because of the light  it has acquired from the Atman enshrined in the heart. The senses perceive, the mind feels and the intellect cogitates because of the light they get from the Atman.

Bharata taking the Paduka
Avibhaktam cha bhuteshu vibhaktam iva cha stitham I
Bhuta bhartr cha tat gyayam grasishnu prabhavishnu cha II sloka 16
अविभक्तं च भूतेषु विभक्तं इव च स्तिथम् I 
भूत भर्तर च तत् ग्यायम् ग्रसिष्णु प्रभा विष्णु च II श्लोक 16

He is undivided and yet he seems to be divided in beings. He is to be known as the supporter of beings. He devours and He generates.

The akasha is all pervading. Yet it appears as if divided into innumerable forms. The fact is that it expands undivided while seeming as if divided. Even such is a case with the Paramatman. As akasa is the support to the remaining four elements, Paramatman is the support of the jagat and the jivatman. In paralaya, they merge with the Paramatman. In creation, they reappear in the Paramatman. They are not exterior to the Paramatman in creation, preservation and destruction. As the waves come up, stay and  disappear in the sea, these things and beings are either patent or latent in the Lord.

The Effect of Evolving in Wisdom 13-15

Bahih antah cha bhutanam acharam charam eva cha I
Sukshma tvat tat avigyeyam durastham cha antike cha tat II sloka 15
बहिः अन्तः च भूतानां अचरं चरं एव च I
सूक्ष्म त्वत् तत् अविज्ञेयं दुरस्थाम् च अन्तिके च तत् II श्लोक 15

Without and within all beings; the unmoving  and also the moving; because of his subtelty He is incomprehensible; He is far and near.

How the cosmic consciousness remains undivided can be explained through a few smilies. In a block of ice immersed in the sea, the water is present within and without. Again akasha  remains undivided in and through all the things with form and formless.Similarly Paramatma is all pervading and undivided through all forms. There is movement on teh surface of the  sea, while it is all stillness at the bottom. The sea water transformed into water becomes subtle and invisible.To the ignorant one, God is far away  somewhere in Vaikuntam. But to the knowing one, None is nearer than God, He being the innermost self.

The Effect of Evolving in Wisdom 13-15

Sarva indriya guna abhasam Sarva indriya vivarjitam I
Asaktam sarva bhrut cha eva nirgunam guna bhoktru cha II sloka 14
सर्व इन्द्रिय गुण आभासं सर्व इन्द्रिय विवर्जितम्  I 
असक्तम् सर्व भृत च एव निर्गुणं गुण भोक्तृ च II श्लोक 14 

Shining by the functions of all the senses, yet without the senses; ABsolute, yet sustaining all; devoid of gunas yet, He experiences them.

The sunlight enables us to see the colourful forms in their true perspective. It maybe said that the sunlight reveals itself as the interpreter of all forms and colours.  While apparently assuming forms and hues, sunlight is not in itself with form and colour. It is unattached to all these modifications. Chaitanya or consciousness which is the characteristic of the Atman, plays a role similar to that of the sunlight. Consciousness lights up the senses and aids their function in their respective wont. The Brahman is the substratum to everything sentient and insentient as the screen is the substratum to the cinema pictures projected on it. The pictures do not get their colours from the screen, nor is the screen affected by these colours Still the screen helps the pictures appear in their true colours.Similarly the three gunas are not in the Brahman. All the same the Brahman aids the gunas shine in their true colours and characteristics. The awareness of the gunas is possible because of the background of the Brahman.
